21 May 2019
DJ Missy and DJ Nix will represent the Northern region in the upcoming President’s Day Arts Competitions billed for July where they will battle out with DJs from other regions for the national title.
DJ Nix scooped position one whilst DJ Missy came second in the regional competitions.
Though Nix scooped position one, all eyes were on Mpho Mogomotsi also known as DJ Missy, a female upcoming DJ who staged an impressive performance giving a unique touch from what most DJs played.
DJ Missy who looks set to take male dominated industry by storm impressed the judges with her performance.
“We are really proud of her, she never showed any signs of stage fright and was well prepared for this competition. Most male DJs here were not confident and poorly organised. We gave each one of them seven minutes to perform but some wasted time looking for a lot of CDs they brought with them,” said Kuda Molebedi who was one of the judges.
DJ K.U.D as he is affectionately called, encouraged the 28 DJs who entered the competition not to focus on house music only, but to do other genres like hip hop.
Another judge Gregory Sekga advised them to improve on their mix and applying effects.
They also advised the upcoming DJs to learn mixing technique and to communicate with the audience.
He further urged contestants to take time to learn more about their equipment and how it is utilised, adding that they observed that the contestants struggled with beat matching.
Scooping second position did not come as a surprise for DJ Missy. “I took my time to learn to use this equipment and I also play various music even though house music is my favourite,” she said.
DJ Missy draws inspiration from the likes of DJ Zinhle, a popular South African female DJ . “I have a passion for music and want to make strides in this industry,” she said.
The 34-year-old who hails from Makuta in North East District is mentored by one of the country’s renowned DJs, DJ Collastro. She credits DJ Collastro for her good performance, saying he did not only teach her to spin the discs and but was also to be patient and focused.
Under the Back Track category King Zakins and Or & Rhino Music earned themselves positions one and two respectively.
Best Live Music category was won by Mmabesi Live and Mazkandi whilst Upcoming Live Category will be represented by Bojosi Ntseane and Pako Chere respectively at the National President’s Day competitions. ENDS
