Batswana Indians dazzle at cultural festival

Different peformers dazzled the audience with solo performances of soothing soulful sounds, semi Indian classic songs with drum beats and piano to modern mix dances fused with Indian drum beats as well as modern Indian hip hop and pop at Mantlwaneng Theatre on May 11.

The event hosted by Botswana Tamil Cultural Association (BTCA) was meant to showcase the rich and colorful multicultural performances through folk music and dance.

The show, which featured many artistes and groups, was held to nurture talent from both Batswana and Indians, as well as to raise funds for Botswana Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre (BGBVC).

An important part of the rich cultural heritage of India are the clothing and the traditional dance forms, which were evident at the show.

The event was graced by Indian High Commissioner to Botswana Dr Rajesh Ranjan, who said Botswana and India continued to enjoy relations in various areas.

He said such events strengthened relations between the two countries as they exchanged ideas and shared values.

BTCA also donated P15 000 to BGBVC.

In an interview, BTCA president Vidhya ArulMurugan, said the organisation started charity work in 2011 and to date, they had donated about P400 000 to different charity organisations.

BGBVC representative, Keikantse Phele applauded the organisation and said they appreciated the donation.

She said the donation would go a long way in assisting them execute their mandate.

BGBVC offers social and legal support, shelter and counselling to survivors of abuse. ENDS
