28 Apr 2019

In a bid to create a culturally vibrant campus and open themselves more to the community, a new theatre dance performance titled The Celebration of K will be showcased at the University of Botswana’s outdoor sports arena Friday.

Briefing the media about the upcoming performance in Gaborone on Thursday, deputy dean of the Faculty of Humanities Dr Peter Sebina said this was also aimed at creating an environment where teaching and learning were supported by an appreciation for diverse cultures within the institution as well as growing the positive image of the institution through arts.

“We also want to open the university to the community and to turn it into a cultural hub through events such as cultural festivals, music shows, culinary competitions, to fashion shows which we intend to do next year,” he stated. He added that UB had embarked on a mission to open up for more collaborations with other entities to utilise the institution’s vast expertise base.

Coordinator of the institution’s Visual And Performing Arts (VAPA), Dr Thulaganyo Mogobe noted that The Celebration of K was thus in line with UB’s strategy of improving the student experience.

“Student experience should not be just about books.

It is about moulding a well-rounded individual who can fit into the society, therefore, this play fits in well with the strategic imperative of the university by focusing on students,” he stated.

He also emphasised that the institution should not be insular as it does not exist in a vacuum.

“We are conscious of the fact that whatever activities we plan for, do not insulate our students from the rest of the community,” Dr Mogobe stated emphasising on plans to collaborate with other tertiary institutions in their future plans. Now in its second year running, this year’s performance is themed on tolerance.

The Faculty of Humanities through the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the University’s French club are championing production of the play using talents from all faculties with UB. ENDS
