The Samora Machel Memorial Museum, which is under construction at Peleng location in Lobatse, will be completed this year after encountering contractual delays.
Mozambique Minister of Culture and Tourism, Silva Armando Dunduru, explained during a tour of the project site recently that construction was at 75 per cent, and that the museum would be inaugurated this year. “The position is positive, there is not much to be worried about. We think that we have to constantly visit the place where the museum is being built so that we report back to the people of Mozambique. The project is not only for the government, but also for the people of Mozambique,” Dunduru said.
The museum is financed by the government of Mozambique, and is being built on the former homestead of the Kgaboesele family. Dunduru expressed gratitude to the government and Lobatse Town Council for providing assistance to the project, pointing that the museum would serve as a memorial for all leaders who fought for the independence of their countries in the southern Africa region. “This project has not only the meaning between the two countries, but it is regional. It is meant to recognise all nationalists that fought for the independence of the region.
This is for transmission of memories of those who fought for independence of the countries in the region as well as Africa in general,” he said. The groundbreaking of the project was conducted by then Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama in December 2015 while construction commenced in 2017.ENDS
