BDF band sings for charity

25 Nov 2018

In an effort to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development, the Botswana Defence Force has over the years donated its time and abundant talent to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged in society.

The annual presentation of the Botswana Defence Force bands in concert is the brainchild of the force, and has been staged since 1991 as part of its corporate social responsibility.

On November 23, multitudes thronged Adansonia Hotel for the Francistown leg of the concert where they were treated to a medley of artistic musical productions and performances.

The breathtaking performances have evolved over the years.

While in the past the bands were an all-male affair, the introduction of women in the army in the last few years has enhanced the aesthetic diversity of performances.

The concept of music-based fundraising is a worldwide phenomenon and has been seen in countries such as the United Kingdom with the Live Aid concert in July 1985 where Bob Geldof and Midge Ure raised funds for relief of the Ethiopian famine.

While armies all over the world have musical bands that support charitable causes, most of their proceeds go to charities supporting ex-soldiers and their families in need, especially those who were wounded during combat operations overseas.

The BDF, however, has a unique mode of operation as proceeds from its concerts benefit the vulnerable in society.

These include organisations looking after the disabled and those in need.

The BDF’ 2nd Brigade Group Commander, Brigadier Joseph Seelo highlighted in an interview that the defence force remains committed to its values of community investment by playing an active role through supporting organisations that aspire to uplift lives.

This, he noted, has been ongoing since the beginning of the concerts many years ago and noted that through this noble gesture, BDF is contributing to the pillar of building a compassionate nation.

The army, he noted, has evolved over the years and is continuously working towards its people centered approach by supporting government efforts such as poverty eradication and promoting an inclusive society.

“Our objective is to gather Batswana in such forums to provide them with entertainment and in the process raise funds for charity,” he said.

Brigadier Seelo paid tribute to those who came to the concert in droves, noting that it was an indication that they shared their ideals and values.

The army, he explained, was part of society and its activities should reflect the needs of the society they live in.

Brigadier Seelo also asserted that music unites people, hence the concerts play a role in nation building.

The fundraiser, he added, was also in line with the President’s call to show compassion and help those in need. From the previous year’s proceeds, Brigadier Seelo further noted that they donated P25 000 each to the Francistown Centre for the Deaf and Healing Hearts Support Group.

The concert in Francistown, he also asserted, attracted many people and due to space constraints many who had wanted to attend could not make it.  ENDS
