Maun-born, Portia Sam-Hwera has been crowned the first princess Mrs Global International, which was held in South Africa recently.
Sam-Hwera, who also won the Mrs Global International Women of Peace and Super Woman awards, said in an interview that even though the competition was tough, she managed to win against all odds.
Sam-Hwera, who competed with other contestants from countries such as US, India, China, among others, said the competition was not a walk in the park. “I won all these awards because of the community service initiatives I was doing here in Botswana such as hosting gender-based violence workshops,” she said.
Therefore, she said she would continue with initiatives geared towards fighting gender-based violence for her project.
Although, she will be working closely with other women, she said men should also be supported so that a common understanding could be reached in the fight against gender-based violence.
Sam-Hwera thanked Maun community and the Mma Mosadi Movement for supporting her dream and for helping her come up with initiatives to raise funds for her trip to South Africa.
“This is exactly what the community needs at the moment. Nothing humbles as seeing strong, fearless and powerful women rise to raise other women in the community such as ours,” she noted. She also thanked all Batswana women who rallied behind her.
In addition, she applauded her husband for always supporting and encouraging her to follow her dreams.
As a result, she encouraged other husbands to always support their wives achieve their dreams. ENDS
