Mpho Mogomotsi’s love for music defines her career path beyond stereotypes.
Popularly known as DJ Missy, Mogomotsi is the only active commercial female DJ in Francistown and has been playing her decks for five years now.
DJ Missy, who hails from Makoto and raised in Francistown where she got to realise her love for music, said DJ Colastraw has been her mentor.
Her music journey started following a Facebook post by DJ Colastraw offering mentorship to ladies with interest in being a DJ and about 10 aspiring ladies turned up for the training.
Today, DJ Missy is the only practicing DJ from the crop due to her persistent approach towards realising her aspirations as a DJ and she continues to attract fans at every gig she plays.
According to DJ Missy, plying trade in a male dominated industry is not a perfect journey.
“Being a female musician trying to find your feet in the industry is a challenge, you need to be focused and certain of what you really need to achieve because some people out there see a woman as a weak person,” she said.
She said she had on numerous occasions come across promoters who wanted to take advantage of her because she is a female artist.
“As a woman, you have to stay humble and disciplined, but some people mistake our humbleness for a weakness because you get to deal with some people booking you and expecting sexual favours. I have always been precise with what I want and I avoid falling for such tricks.
I would rather lose a booking than being tricked into those,” she explained.
She idolises South Africa DJ Zinhle and hopes to achieve to be household name like her.
DJ Missy has already performed in neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Namibia.
Now, she has her set her eyes on the international stage.
In terms of producing her music, DJ Missy said she intended to stick to commercial house music because it was popular and since she had created her brand around commercial, it was only logical to stick to it.
She is currently working in collaboration with a South African soul singer Paul SA on a single track to be released in the near future.
DJ Missy emphasized the need to support each other as women in music, noting that for women to excel, first they need to support each other and appreciate the fact that without each other, they cannot make it.
She believes she is still far from achieving her dreams, and besides the money and fame, she holds a strong thought that for her to claim the crown of success, somehow she has to show a number of female DJs she has helped to groom. Ends
