20 Aug 2018
After a one-year absence, Lobatse’s cultural show will be back on this year.
The Thobo Cultural Festival, that started in 2015, will usher in Spring in September.
In an interview, the organiser of the festival, Tshepo Thedi indicated that the show was paused in 2017 due to financial constraints.
However, she stated that this year the show will be staged and continue in future.
Thedi said one of the festival’s supporters, Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development could not continue with the support in 2017, hence the pause.
With the objective of promoting indigenous culture, the show also intends to give back to the community, especially vulnerable children in Lobatse and surrounding areas.
On the day, Thedi said patrons would be entertained with poetry, traditional song and dance; traditional games, jazz music as well as indulging in various cuisine.
Describing it as the melting pot of different countries, Thedi noted that there would be dishes from different countries in celebration of their culture.
She said Thobo had broaden its reach this year by involving other cultures like South Africa, India, Nigeria, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
She explained that the decision to incorporate other cultures was to celebrate and share culture in this globalised world.
Thedi further indicated that to make dishes more authentic, they had invited nationals from the countries to prepare the dishes.
She said people should look forward to potjiekos from South Africa, Indian curry dish, Setswana traditional delicacies of mokoto, seswaa, bogobe jwa lerotse and many more, as well as other signature dishes from various countries.
Thobo Cultural Festival will be hosted at Knockduff Farm on September 1, with performances by Ditiro Leero, Matota traditional group, Dj Kaybee, among others. ENDS
