I Love Botswana Ensemble sets to conquer Broadway

09 Aug 2018

Botswana’s most prolific dance troupe I love Botswana Ensemble will perform their new production Pula on a Broadway stage in Times Square, New York, USA on August 22- 23.

They are supported by Botswana Tourism Organisation and Avani Hotel. The troupe’s patron, Thea Khama said the vision of the project was to give the ensemble international exposure and demonstrate that dance could be an important element that could be used to market local tourism offerings. Khama said the group would take performing arts and cultural tourism to greater heights and showcase the country’s diversity and unity.

Artistic director of I Love Botswana Ensemble, Andrew Kola said the production chronicled the practical and mystical relationship that Batswana have with the rain. ‘‘Pula, which means rain in the Setswana, is a national project under Botswana’s Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism which traces how rain brings human, plants and animals under one Botswana sky through traditional song and dance,” he said. Avani hotel general manager, Derick Van Der Nest said the Broadway trip was expected to further enhance I Love Botswana’s growing reputation.  He urged the group to do their best and show people outside the country that Botswana had a story to tell.

“The I Love Botswana Ensemble has previously raised the Botswana flag in different countries and has done extremely well in selling our cultural tourism through music, dance and acting,’’ he said. ENDS
