Young comedian makes strides

07 Aug 2018

Comedy has been undoubtedly flaccid in the Chobe District. But its resurgence is imminent, thanks to Richard Kayoka (27), whose stage name is Chido, who recently won position one in the President’s Day Art Competitions (Stand-up Comedy).

Chido is the first young comedian to compose and perform in Sesubiya, though he also composes Setswana jokes to cater for those who do not understand his mother tongue. When the Kavimba-born comedian created a video character “vha Lloyd” on social media it was out of boredom and he did not know that it would become so popular as to be his gateway into comedy scene.

However, as the demand for his funny video clips intensified, he had to change his priorities to serve as a digital and stand-up comedian.

Chido said he drew his humor from family life, as he writes jokes based on observations and personal experiences of a one-room lifestyle. “There are many things that could be found amusing in the day to day activities of a one-roomed lifestyle and I always take note of such,” he said in an interview with BOPA.

The young comedian says he markets himself to corporates and event organisers through direct negotiations, social media advertising and branded merchandise.

He also uploads funny video clips on his Facebook page for the general public and these have attracted a large number of followers in Botswana and the Kaprivi region of Namibia.“There is a rising scene of comedy in Botswana and this is a perfect opportunity for upcoming comedians to step up,” he said.

Chido says he also derives inspiration from Nigerian funny man Klint da drunk and South Africa’s Trevor Noah, adding that he wants to emulate how the two craft their jokes and consolidate the skills into the uniqueness of his style.

His dream is to one day host his own one man show, produce high quality videos of longer duration and own a stall where he would sell merchandise and promote brand awareness.Although he cites many challenges, he says nothing will deter him from reaching his goals.

Earning a livable salary through comedy is not easy, but Chido says he is determined to take the risk, hence he decided to quit his previous job as a bartender in one of the luxurious lodges in Kasane to focus solely on comedy and building up his brand.

He says his family crossed swords with him about this decision as they perceive comedy to be just a hobby and not a sustainable career path but he believes that he has a point to prove.

He expressed gratitude to his girlfriend and cousins who always offer emotional and financial support and were his first audience. He has performed at various occasions including Miss Chobe 2017 and Chobe Land board best employees awards. ENDS
