I love Botswana Ensemble off to Broadway
31 Jul 2018
In a historical move I love Botswana Ensemble, a group of Mophato Dance Group and other Batswana performing artists will showcase their talent aimed at marketing Botswana in Broadway, United States of America.
A 52 member group through the auspices of Botswana Tourism Organisation will be the first performers from an African country to dance in Broadway.
However, Nigerian performers once graced Broadway, but for singing, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama told his electorate at Sebabi kgotla in Serowe recently.
The I love Botswana Ensemble is reportedly marketing the country outside and therefore stimulating and catalysing the tourists’ yearn to visit Botswana. Minister Khama said I love Botswana Ensemble went to Germany in 2016 on a similar mandate whereupon their return, approached his office with a view to showcase their dancing prowess at Broadway.
Following their proposal, Khama said he took up the matter with the Office of the President where he was advised to approach Cabinet for approval.
Khama drummed support for the group and promised to present the group to his constituents upon their arrival from the US so they could appreciate the good work they were doing.
On other issues, Minister Khama reminded his electorate of the impending plastic bag ban beginning November, noting that plastic bags littered the environment.
He informed his constituents that government would approve the use of paper bags and consequently suggested that his electorate make own carrier bags from cloths.
Among his arguments for the ban of plastic bags, Minister Khama said that it was financially unsound for government to hire Ipelegeng workers to pick plastic litter, which could have been avoided by the use of paper bags.
He counter-argued that though plastic bags manufacturers argued that the ban would result in job loses, they could still run profitable businesses by exporting their plastics, a practice they have been doing all along. ENDS
