Chobe community on July 21 braved the chill night breezes and filled Seboba Recreational Park to its brim in order to witness local artistes and some members of Cabinet on the dance floor.
Minister of Basic Education, Bagalatia Arone, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Bogolo Kenewendo and Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Machana Shamukuni entertained revellers with their dance moves, while Culture Spears, DJ LaTimmy, Ramosara, MC Leungo and Skinnyboy entertained the merrymakers.
In an interview, the organiser of the activity, Kaboyaone Sarifu said the event was a brain child of Tse Tilodi traditional group aimed at raising funds to assist the 12 schools in Chobe with infrastructure such as out-door teaching areas and equipment such as printers and photocopiers.
He said the traditional dance group made an assessment and realised that there was acute shortage of infrastructure and equipment across all the schools in the district.
That, he said made learning not conducive and led to poor academic performance.
Sarifu said the group decided to collect returnable bottles and sell to KBL as a way of raising funds and it engaged each village in the district to collect 10 000 bottles.
He said the target was to raise P12 million in 12 years and donate P1 million to each school.
He explained that the concert was aimed at raising administration funds for collection and sale of bottles.
Sarifu thanked the Chobe community for turning up in large numbers and urged them to embrace themselves for more creative activities that are also aimed at raising funds for the schools.
“By attending these activities the people of Chobe are not only entertained but are also making a contribution towards improving the education system in the district,” he said.
Sarifu thanked Elephant without Borders, Bakwena Lodge, Mowana Lodge, Chobe Marina Lodge and Travelodge for sponsoring the event.
He said the patron of the project was the area MP, Shamukuni and he urged the business community to continue supporting the initiative as it was a multi-sectoral project.
Sarifu further said activities such as concerts also empowered the community as they got an opportunity to lease food and drink stalls.
The concert kicked off with a boat cruise in which revelers had to pay P110 while at the entrance fee was P50. ENDS
