The saying that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step holds true for Kabelo Nkwane aka DJ Maskhebo, whose success in music started from humble beginnings. 

In an interview with BOPA the multi-talented entertainer who is a DJ, singer and a producer said his journey in music dated back to his childhood days. 

DJ Maskhebo who has reached his zenith in the music industry by owning a record label called On The Beat Entertainment, associates his achievements to his love for music, realised during his secondary school days. 

His schooling days he said moulded his present standing.  

“I was part of various dance groups and while at Matsha College we had a famous dance group called Mapitori which performed during school events,” he said.

He credits Toziba Tshambani, aka DJ Debots who unearthed and nurtured his talent after seeing him in his first ever gig at Phakalane in Gaborone. 

“It was such an honour and a blessing as a newbie in entertainment industry to play a music deck instrument alongside DJ Debots,” he said. 

The 26 year-old DJ sharpened his turntable skills by playing at parties, weddings and corporate events.

His zeal for deejaying saw him venturing into music production in 2014 under the mentorship of Afro Zest of Team Distant, Dr Tawanda and later Dubblin of Dubblin Productions. 

Besides producing for other artistes, he performs in festivals around the country, playing mainly house music.

The annual Hukuntsi festival dubbed Macheng Music Concert is Maskhedo’s brain child and is in its third year running. 

The concert aims to nurture and promote upcoming artistes in Kgalagadi region while proceeds from the show assist pupils living with disability at Makgakgakane Primary School in Hukuntsi with stationery.

He has also sponsored the best overall students at Lehutshelo and Lehututu junior secondary schools prize giving ceremony in 2016. 

On The Beat Entertainment was established in 2015 and is based in Modipane. It was born after he won second best DJ in President Arts Competition at Kgalagadi and Ghanzi constituency and later got position five in the grand finale.  The record label helps potential upcoming artistes venture into the industry.  ENDS
