Workshop reaches youth through camera
05 Jul 2018
Redds Chillstep Sundays this past weekend hosted a photography workshop at Little Theatre museum aiming to contribute towards behavioural change, empowering the youth and elevating them through positive and educational initiatives themed #KeepTheYouthBusyWorkshops.
Speaking in an interview, founder of the Redds Chillstep Sundays, Drew Chadhall said the workshop was a collaboration between Redds Chillstep Sundays, Orange 4G and Native Events.
“The event is a part of a series of workshops hosted each month under different themes, featuring photography exhibition by Karabo Hassan of Tronic Arts Photography as well as engagements by key industry players,” he said.
He indicated that there was also a panel of speakers of seasoned and respected photographers among them Igor Barandovski of Image Lounge, Kabo Olesitse of KO Photography and Monirul Bhuiyan of Press Photo.
“Giving words of encouragement were Monametse Kalayamotho, Basadi Masimolole of Celebrations of Africa and Mbakiso Magwape from Media Republic,” said Drew.
He said their workshops were self-funded and had a proven track record of positively contributing towards youth behavioural change and talent growth.
“One of our tag lines is Keep The Youth Busy, and this is in efforts to keep them away from substance abuse, idle minds and unwanted partakes, as we know, an idle mind is said to be the devil’s playground,” he said.
Chadhall said he was happy with the youth coming out in hordes to attend and support their monthly Redds Chillstep Sundays events.
He said they have taken it upon themselves to do their part in the development and guidance of youth through the ‘tumultuous’ journey of growth.
Chadhall further said entrance to the workshop was free with seating limited to only 140 attendants.
“The next workshop will be hosted on July 28 under the theme: DJs and Personal Branding,” he concluded.
Redds Chillstep Sundays is an art and cultural experience where a pop up art gallery exhibits artists every last Sunday of each month.
The first Chillstep Sundays event was held on August 30 2015 and it used to host 40 to 50 people, then as more people got to know about it, numbers have significantly increased to hundreds.
The main goal of the event is to empower artists and designers as to create a market for them to be able to exhibit and sell their work.
Chadhall once indicated that there are limited spaces for exhibitors as only six artists and six designers can showcase their work and these chosen few are selected from a large number of entries by a panel of judges. ENDS
