07 Jun 2018

Rap music is commonly known to be about love issues, “beef” among artistes, and even offensive language, but Francistown -based young artiste Mteezy is praising God with rap music.

Born Bongani Ngwenya, the 26 year-old Ramokgwebana born gospel rap artiste has released a single, namely Demons Away.

Mteezy said the message behind Demons Away is about the bad things that usually happen in life such as Satanism, accidents, diseases and people killing each other, and now he wants God to help in ending all these.

He stated that before he released his single, he was featured by some artistes and has also sung in the church choir.

Mteezy said he was inspired to sing rap music by many rap artistes locally such as Zeus, Dramaboi, and international rappers such as the late US Rap star Tupac Shakur and Snoop Doggy Dog.

To make things even more interesting, Mteezy is using his mother language Ikalanga in most of his songs and choose it in order to promote the language, which is well spoken in Francistown and surrounding areas.

He said he choose to sing gospel rap in order to praise God and thank him for everything he had done for him.

The young musician also talked about the benefits of taking time before releasing a song, saying he took his time before releasing Demons Away so that he came up with a quality song for his fans.

Released last year April and its video three months later, he said the single was recorded at Eardrumz Beats Studios in Francistown by the young producer known as JRB and the video was produced and directed by Kaylor Soft.

The video was shot in Francistown, featuring the ‘Spaghetti road’ as the new Francistown interchange junction is commonly known, township life style known as kasi life style and some churches in Francistown.

Mteezy said he is happy because his video has already been aired in Pula Power show in Botswana Television (Btv) and some Zambian television stations as well as radio stations such as Duma Fm. He is marketing the single in social media, performances at church and festivals and also takes his music to radio stations where he also got interviewed.

Mteezy is now planning to take part in the President’s Day competitions as he had realised that they have helped in promoting upcoming artists.

He expressed concern that lack of unity amongst artistes, piracy and lack of funds for marketing are the major things that usually harm the music industry in Botswana.

Mteezy also blamed alcohol and drug abuse for failure of many artistes, noting that some music promoters cheated upcoming artistes by not paying them after performances and that kills morale of those artistes.

He pleaded with parents not to prevent their children who show interest in singing, but rather support them as well as  understand that not all can find employment and others may have to earn a living through their talent.

Mteezy urged the youth to believe in God and put everything they do in his hands in order for them to succeed, adding that discipline and believing in oneself are the key to every artist’s success. He advised young children who want to sing like him to concentrate on finishing their studies first, as education is the key to almost every success. ENDS
