Motivated by his interest in traditional music from an early age, 36-year-old Mosimanegape Matlho of Kanye, AKA Sua Pan, recently dropped a traditional folklore album titled, Suapan Individual Brilliance.

In an interview, the energetic folklore musician said he started his project in August 2016 and released the eight-track album this year in March. “The album was received well by the market and is receiving more air play in most of the local radio stations like Duma FM and RB1,” he said.

He revealed that album was recorded at Prez Beads Kalakuta Records in Molepolole, indicating that it featured other traditional artistes like Kgokgonono, Mathaithai and Tsankana. He said the album featured hit songs, Tshwaro and Divorce, which were receiving more airplay and are the most loved.

Sua Pan said what differentiated him from other artistes was his interest and use of Segaba, a traditional instrument otherwise known as a thumb piano, and live recording of his songs.

“I started playing Segaba while I was growing up. I used to play it under the mentorship of Moroka Moreri and Genius Seletso,” he said.

Sua Pan said he started his music career in 2001, adding that by that time he was working with a traditional group called Mogwana Traditional Troupe, where he learnt a lot of skills. In 2003, he was part of the Mogwana Traditional Troupe that went to London for the Embassy celebrations.

In 2009, he worked with Seragantshwane Cultural Group. He said he recorded an album titled, Pipimpi in 2011, which did not do well in the market. Meanwhile, he pointed out that piracy was killing their music, pleading with the nation to stop it and support local music so that it can grow to the next level. ENDS
