It’s in every little girl’s dream to yearn for a sisterhood movement where she would grow up in the modern world and experience all the pressures and beauties of life.
The year 2014 saw an exciting initiative that speaks out to young girls all over the country known as SKY Girls BW. SKY is a movement for girls by girls between the ages of 11 and 14-years-old. The movement has become a household name amongst teenagers in Botswana from Gaborone to as far as Kang and Francistown.
It is a sisterhood that encourages teenagers and adolescents to be true to themselves whilst being responsible young women who can make the best decisions for themselves.
SKY is an acronym for “Shapo Ka Yone and Sure Ka Yone,” and represents the limitless potential in every Motswana girl who is aspiring to be the best that she can be. It helps girls to express themselves, be who they want to be, and feel confident in the choices they make.
This year SKY will be turning a year and it has continued to paint the cities of Gaborone and Francistown pink and purple through branding in combi, t-shirts and wrist bands.
Also capturing audiences in different spheres of the country, SKY has extended beyond just a magazine to include a radio programme. The radio programme airs on Yarona FM every Sunday from 2pm to 3pm and it is hosted by Zizi Panther and two other girls from SKY, Mandi and Warona.
It also airs on RB2 every Monday at 3:45 pm. For her part, Lorato Tebogo, SKY spokesperson and public relations manager, said the movement has grown in leaps and bounds since its launch with over 10 000 registered SKY girls who have pledged to make choices that are best for them. She added that their Facebook page has reached over 33 000 likes to date, and that it has exceeded their expectation.
Tebogo says this is a platform for every little girl to share their everyday experiences, joy, highs and lows. It has partnered with celebrities, television personalities and prominent people in society to help the movement known as friends of SKY. “Together these platforms provide space for girls to express themselves and share thoughts, ideas and experiences.
By interacting with each other, SKY girls will be able to make informed choices, ultimately SKY is in the hands of the girls who are part of it and will evolve as they do,” said Ms Tebogo.
Furthermore, Nkozi Chukura the editor and co-creator of SKY magazine mentioned that they are looking forward to their 5th issue of the magazine that will be released next week. She said the magazine has four pillars of health, beauty, fashion and music. ENDS
