A top achievers formula for success
19 Mar 2025
Phenyo Khuruta, a former student of Francistown Senior Secondary School, is a shining example of academic excellence after securing the second position in the national Top Achievers list, attaining eight A*s, one B, and one C results in the 2024 Botswana General Certificate for Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination.
Growing up as an average student who often achieved Bs and occasional As in primary school, Phenyo’s academic journey took a significant turn for the better in Form 1, as he began to attain high grades. He attributes his success to a focused approach to studying, emphasising the importance of studying smart rather than simply reading passively.
Phenyo said his disciplined nature and strong moral values played a crucial role in his academic achievements. He believes in maximizing efficiency in his studies, allowing him to cover substantial material in a limited time.
A key strategy he employed was helping fellow students who struggled with challenging topics, which not only reinforced his own understanding, but also fostered a collaborative learning environment. He described using the Feynman Technique, which implies studying a topic and then explaining it to others, as a method that greatly benefited him.
In addition to collaborative learning, Phenyo found success through using past examination papers, more practice, particularly Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, and Statistics. As for use of technology, Phenyo highlighted its significance in his studies, particularly the laptop provided by the school.
He utilised YouTube, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to aid his examination preparation. However he cautioned against being distracted by social media, urging learners to prioritise their study time.
He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family, which allowed him to concentrate fully on his studies. Phenyo also acknowledged the role of his classmates and friends in his academic journey, as well as his Chemistry teacher, Mr Mani, whose passion for teaching created a conducive learning environment.
Despite attending FSSS, which is situated around areas like Kgaphamadi and Maipaahela, known for social challenges, including drug use, Phenyo remained focused and undistracted. He carefully chose friends who motivated and inspired him, refraining from peer pressure that could derail his academic goals; as he knew well what he wanted, adding that most students are easily carried away by peer pressure.
Phenyo’s advice to current students is on the wise use of time, as he views it as a precious gift, therefore vital to make the most out of it. He encouraged students to set clear goals, utilise past examination papers, and adopt smart study techniques, including using their talents and gifts in helping others.
His mother, Ms Marriam Khuruta, described Phenyo as a special, intelligent, disciplined and God-fearing child. As a teacher herself, she, along with Phenyo’s father, ensured he had all the necessary materials to excel in his studies. Their involvement and support have been instrumental in Phenyo’s achievements, making them proud.
Ms Khuruta’s message to other parents is to recognise and embrace the unique qualities of each child, urging them to be actively involved in their children’s educational journeys, providing support and encouragement every step of the way. ENDS
