Perseverance, uniqueness, and resilience are key ingredients in the success story of Mr Omphile Johane, affectionately known as Modidima.
His journey is a powerful testament to how hard work, creativity, and strategic thinking can lead to realisation of one’s dreams. Born and raised in Maun at Matlapana ward, Mr Johane grew up with ambitious aspirations, determined to achieve more in life. Despite not advancing far in education, he defied the odds by pursuing various hustles to realise his dreams. Initially, he ventured into comedy, which helped him build an audience.
However, it was his foray into selling tswii, a local delicacy and staple food in the Ngamiland and Okavango regions that truly catapulted his fame across the country.
The popularity of tswii allowed Mr Johane to gain recognition nationwide, as more people learned about and tasted the dish, thanks to his efforts.
“The response I received from customers in Francistown was heart warming. On a good day, I would make around P3, 000,” Modidima shared with passion. Recognising the potential of his business, he decided to expand his reach, selling tswii in various locations, including Selebi Phikwe, Palapye, Gaborone, and Jwaneng.
In these larger markets, his sales soared, often doubling his previous earnings. Encouraged by his success, Modidima diversified his commodities by introducing fish, which he affectionately calls “mmaleshengu” due to its size, further attracting more customers. Despite a higher price point, his products resonated well with consumers, leading to significant profits.
“The combination of tswii and maleshengu has returned substantial profits, allowing me to invest in my projects, including preparations for my wedding,” he explained.
Today, Mr Johane owns a farm equipped with a borehole and other properties.
He envisions his farm as a hub for various activities, including a restaurant, a venue for social gatherings, and a host for sports events.
Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Mr Johane faced challenges but remained undeterred by negative energy and criticism.
After experiencing a divorce, he chose to rise above the situation and continue building the future he desires. Regarding social media, Mr Johane views it as a powerful tool for marketing and promoting his business. “I primarily use social media to attract customers.
I advertise most of my products through platforms like Facebook and TikTok, and the feedback has been amazing.
“I owe much of my success to these platforms for building my brand and interacting with my customers,” he expressed gratefully. In a message to fellow entrepreneurs, Mr Johane urged them to embody perseverance, focus, and consistency despite challenges. “As business owners, our goal is to make profits. Forget about those with negative energy, face challenges head-on, push forward every day, and results will surely come,” he concluded. ENDS
