BPC restores Unit 4 of Morupule B
03 Apr 2025
Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has restored one of the power generating units, (Unit4) at Morupule B Power Station.
A public notice from BPC says the development enhances local base load generation capacity and alleviates the current supply deficit. It says the BPC’s generation capacity from Morupule Power Station has increased to 235MW, that is Morupule A 55MW and MorupuleB 180MW.
It says the two diesel based emergency power facilities provide a total of 130MW for dispatch under grid constraints to maintain system stability.
While the recovery of the units gradually improves power supply, the public notice states that a demand shortfall will continue to obtain, with the national electricity demand currently at 640MW during peak hours and 440MW during off peak hours. And, therefore, BPC will continue to implement load management activities to balance supply and demand at a reduced scale compared to the previous week.
“BPC expects the power supply situation to improve with Morupule B unit 2 scheduled to be back in operation on April 17 2025.”
However, the public notice says stability is expected by June 2025 with three units (unit 1, 2 and 4) expected to be fully operational at Morupule B, barring any unforeseen circumstances, says the public notice. ENDS
