Ministry aware of books shortage

02 Apr 2025

The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education is aware of the shortage of textbooks in schools across the country.

Answering a question in Parliament yesterday, the Assistant Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education Mr Justin Hunyepa said the situation was created largely by shortage of funds to procure enough textbooks for all learners over the years, which has created a huge backlog of textbooks shortages.

He also said that the ministry found itself in this predicament because the previous budget was cut by about P600 million, which subjected the ministry to a difficult situation it is currently in. Mr Hunyepa said the ministry pinned its hope on the new financial year to address the state of affairs, which is generally a national concern.

Tati East MP, Mr Tlhabologo Furniture had asked the minister if he is aware of lack of books in schools, particularly Tshesebe and measures in place to normalise the situation. ENDS
