Ministry in process to overhaul Ipelegeng programme

01 Apr 2025

The Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs is undertaking a holistic transformation of the Ipelegeng programme, a process whose intention is to culminate with a new face of the programme.

Answering a question in Parliament yesterday, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs Mr Ignatius Moswaane said the process was among others, considering issues such as the institutional framework and coordination structure. He said the overall transformation of the programme envisaged to complete in June 2025, would determine how Ipelegeng should be structured.

Therefore, Mr Moswaane said he could not pre-empt the outcome of the process by either confirming or denying plans to hire Ipelegeng coordinators as permanent and pensionable employees as opposed to appointing them through the current secondment basis.

He also said coordinators were not barred from competing for posts higher than their secondment positions, provided they possessed the required length of experience, length of service in the substantive post and qualification as guided by the scheme of service.

Okavango East MP, Mr Gabatshole Disho had wanted to know whether there were plans to make the new Ipelegeng programme a fully-fledged department with its own head of department and support staff for smooth running, and if so, what was the intention with those who were currently holding the fort. ENDS
