President Advocate Duma Boko has emphasised the need for collaboration in tackling crime, particularly Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ritual killings.
Speaking at the official opening of the National Conference on Crime Prevention in Gaborone today, he highlighted the complexity of GBV since it often times occurred in private spaces, making state intervention challenging.
“There needs to be a collaborative effort to address GBV, recognising the role of clergy and community counselors as early responders,” he stated.
On ritual killings, President Boko pointed to the involvement of traditional healers, calling for their engagement and sensitisation as key stakeholders in crime prevention.
“As focal groups in such crimes, they serve as an early warning system in the justice process,” he noted.
He urged stakeholders to work together in mapping solutions, critically assessing policies and challenging legislative barriers to justice.
For her part, Commissioner of Police, Ms Dinah Marathe said crime was a national security threat that had devastating impacts on society in general.
She said thus the Botswana Police Service had embraced a multi-sectoral approach in which various communities and stakeholders collaborated in identifying local crime issues, develop issues and implement preventative measures to ensure their safety.
“This goes to validate our organisational mission, which spells that we will provide a professional policing service in partnership with the community," she said. ENDS
