Government addresses Bots Veg compliance issues

18 Mar 2025

Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has taken action regarding alleged violations of labor laws at Bots Veg Dikgatlhong farm in the Kudumatse-Dovedale corridor.

Minister Major General Pius Mokgware said that labour inspection officers were dispatched to assess compliance. The inspection uncovered several areas of non-compliance, including the lack of written contracts, insufficient protective clothing, and a shortage of portable toilets for workers.

Following these findings, the employer was advised to implement the recommendations outlined in the labor inspection report. A subsequent follow-up revealed that the employer had complied with the necessary corrections.

Minister Mokgware said the farm was now adhering to the minimum wage order. However, concerns regarding sanitation and the potential risk of infectious diseases remain.

To address these issues, the employer has committed to procuring additional portable toilets and ensuring that all employees had access to potable water. Maj. Gen. Mokgware emphasised the ministry’s commitment to prioritising labour inspections in the agricultural sector to protect vulnerable groups, including children, farm workers, and migrant employees.

MP for Shoshong, Mr Moneedi Bagaisamang questioned the minister about the poor working and living conditions reported at farms in the Kudumatse-Dovedale area, particularly at Bots Veg Dikgatlhong farm. He also asked if the minister was aware of issues of  non-compliance with payment standards set forth by labour laws and the risks posed by inadequate sanitation. ENDS
