Tlokweng - Zeerust road expansion not in TNDP
12 Mar 2025
Parliament has been told that the expansion of Tlokweng-Zeerust road between Maratanang and Tlokweng border post to a dual carriageway is not budgeted for in the Transitional National Development Plan.
Responding to a question from Tlokweng MP, Mr Phenyo Segokgo, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Noah Salakae said the road was designed during the National Development Plan 10 as a dual carriage way as part of the Gaborone-Tlokweng border post road.
However, due to financial constraints, the section between Maratanang and the border was constructed as a single carriageway, he said.
He said the current single-carriage way road with wide shoulders would manage traffic well.
Nevertheless, Mr Salakae said the ministry recognised the importance of the road that connected Botswana and South Africa through Tlokweng/Kopfontein border post, adding they would continue to monitor increase of traffic on the road to timely implement any required future developments.
Mr Segokogo had asked if there were any intentions to expand the Zeerust road to a dual carriage way, considering the huge traffic volume. ENDS
