Francistown Bowls Club has organised a one-day Francistown major bowls tournament in Francistown on Saturday.
The event will see five clubs from across Botswana competing for top honours and a share of P7000 in prize money.
Teams from Francistown, Orapa, Gaborone, Selibe Phikwe, and Jwaneng will battle it out on the greens.
A total of 64 bowlers will participate, with each club fielding three teams of four players, except Francistown, who will enter four teams.
This makes for a significant turnout, according to Francistown Bowls Club competition secretary, Charmaine Hassen.
“This is one tournament that attracts a huge number of bowlers in the Botswana Bowling Association calendar of events,” she said.
Hassen highlighted the tournament’s self-funded nature, stating that despite its scale and popularity, the Francistown Major Bowls Club was yet to secure a sponsor. “We are sponsoring the tournament ourselves,” she said.
The competition holds significance as the opening event of the 2025 season’s five major competitions. The stakes are high, with P4000 awaiting the first-place winners, P2000 for second place, and P1000 for third.
With such substantial prizes and the prestige of winning the inaugural event of the season, fierce competition was expected.
The Francistown Major promises to be a thrilling spectacle of bowls, showcasing the talent and dedication within Botswana’s bowling community. ENDS
