Boko steadfast on change

06 Mar 2025

Government is on course to transform the country in the next three years, President Advocate Duma Boko says.

Speaking at a meet-and-greet session with Batswana living in California, he emphasised the urgent need to tackle challenges facing the nation, including youth unemployment, economic instability, reliance on diamonds, and struggling health and education systems.

“The future of Botswana is poised to be different from what it is today,” President Boko said.

The majority of attendees were students studying in the US, whom the President urged to work diligently, acquire knowledge and return home to contribute to the country’s development.

“I urge you to come home with your creativity and exuberance to reconfigure change,” he stated, highlighting key areas for economic revival such as the development of a green economy, climate-smart agriculture, eco-tourism and
the digital economy.

When addressing his willingness to implement necessary changes, President Boko asserted that he was neither too slow to act nor hesitant to address the needs of Batswana.

He noted the complexities of political leadership, explaining that he aimed to remain a ‘wounded healer’ rather than a ‘wounded hunter’.

Botswana’s Ambassador to the US, Maj. Gen. Mpho Mophuting, acknowledged the importance of the President’s visit, stating that it has become customary for visiting heads of state to engage with Batswana in the diaspora.

He encouraged the community to network and showcase their contributions to the new political landscape back home. ENDS
