Starlink picks Botswana as connectivity hub

05 Mar 2025

In a transformative move for internet access in Southern Africa, Starlink aims to position Botswana as a key connectivity hub, according to Mr Ben MacWilliams, Global Licensing and Activation Director at Starlink.

Mr MacWilliams briefed Botswana delegation led by President Advocate Duma Boko during a tour of SpaceX and Starlink mini production facilities on Tuesday.

Botswana is set to become the first African country to conduct critical tests on new connectivity technologies designed to enhance internet access.

Mr MacWilliams highlighted that these advancements would significantly increase user capacity and bandwidth, accommodating more individuals online.

“Starlink intends to collaborate with Botswana to innovate and connect rural communities, ultimately improving overall connectivity,” said Mr MacWilliams.

Currently, two Starlink gateway stations are operational in Gaborone and Lobatse, with plans to expand and solidify Botswana’s status as a digital hub for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Looking ahead, Mr MacWilliams announced that additional gateway sites would be established to support various sectors of the economy and individual subscribers.

“The launch of Starlink in Botswana represents a significant step towards enhancing digital connectivity and bridging the digital divide. We have already attracted 6 000 users within less than six months,” he noted.

Starlink, the satellite internet service by SpaceX, made its official debut in Botswana in September of last year, marking a critical milestone for improved internet connectivity.

This initiative has led to indirect job creation through retail outlets and holds the potential to support small businesses benefiting from enhanced internet services.

Moreover, Starlink aims to forge partnerships with local businesses and collaborate with the SmartBots programme to improve connectivity in schools and remote areas.

Minister of Communications and Innovation, Mr David Tshere, expressed his support for Starlink’s arrival, stating it was a step in the right direction for bridging the connectivity gap.

He emphasised that while the popularity of Starlink’s satellite internet service was on the rise, l internet providers were unlikely to be pushed out of the market in the near future.

“The pricing structure of Starlink provides a viable alternative to traditional internet services and enhances nationwide internet penetration,” he said.

He highlighted the positive impact of mini Starlink devices in areas lacking electricity and encouraged internet providers to leverage existing fiber optic networks to sustain their businesses.

While Starlink is praised for delivering broadband to underserved and remote areas, it is not expected to diminish the roles of local internet providers due to various market factors.

The guided tour of SpaceX facilities gave the delegation valuable insights into the commercialisation of space flights and the design and manufacturing of rocket vehicles. ENDS
