Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mr Ketlhalefile Motshegwa has called on the leadership of the Kweneng District Council to devise solutions for the challenges facing the authority.
Addressing a council meeting recently, he shared insights on the proposed Local Government Decentralisation Policy. The policy received a warm welcome from most councillors, who expressed optimism that it would empower councils to make independent decisions.
Lekgwapheng Ward councillor, Mr Mpho Segwe emphasised the potential benefits of the policy.
“If properly implemented, it can significantly improve the lives of our citizens. It is our responsibility to ensure that this policy is not just a concept but a reality that Batswana can see and feel. They elected us with the hope that we will enhance their livelihoods,” said Mr Segwe.
Echoing this sentiment, Lentsweletau South Ward councillor Mr Thebeyame Molefe praised the policy for its potential to empower council chairpersons.
Meanwhile, Borakalalo Ward councillor raised concerns about corruption in the Kweneng District Council, noting that the implementation of the policy could aid in combating the issue. He highlighted the case of the Molepolole Bus Rank, which has become a “white elephant” due to mismanagement.
Mr Khan, another councillor, suggested that with enhanced responsibilities stemming from the policy, a review of councillors’ remuneration may be necessary to ensure their salaries aligned with their duties.
Kotolaname/Lesilakgokong Ward councillor, Mr Nelson Rauwe also addressed the pressing issue of corruption, labeling it a significant obstacle to the country’s development efforts. ENDS
