BCA retains committee

04 Mar 2025

The Botswana Cycling Association (BCA) has retained three members of the previous committee during their elective annual general meeting (AGM) held over the weekend.

These are Kagiso Potongwane (president), Emmanuel Mmusetsi (vice president) and Game Mompe as the secretary general. Leutlwetse Kgosidialwa was elected as additional member while three positions of treasurer, public relations executive and second additional member remain vacant.

Potongwane extended gratitude to the cycling community and affiliate clubs leadership for their contribution to the growth and development of cycling during their term of office. He assured affiliates that his committee would do more to achieve the intended results for cycling as they lead the association for another three years in office.

“I believe that more can be achieved if we all come together and contribute our individual skills, knowledge and efforts toward the common goals and objectives of our wonderful sport,” Potongwane said.

To enhance growth in cycling sport, the association developed draft policies for affiliate clubs to consider and adopt.

Potongwane said the policies are Rider Licencing Regulations and Rider Transfer Guidelines, which he indicated that a workshop “will be held to consider and discuss the policies at length, so that they are thoroughly dealt with and adopted by the BCA.”

Highlighting some of the significant milestones during their term in office, Potongwane said the association’s secretary general, Mompe, was appointed to serve on the Regional Organising Committee (ROC) for the 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games.

Recently, Mompe has also been elected as a member of the Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Management Committee. These appointments, Potongwane said, reflected Mompe’s outstanding contributions to sports and an unwavering commitment to youth development. He also said the association achieved partnerships and collaborations.

The BCA signed a three-year partnership agreement with the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund to support each other in promoting road safety and accident prevention during the tenure of the agreement, as well as partnering with MVA Fund for the Annual MVA Fund Chief Executive Officer’s Safe Mobility Challenge. This is a road safety awareness event that includes participation by cyclists and runners.

However, the association continues to face challenges particularly of non-compliance and Potongwane implored affiliate clubs to comply adding that the membership of the BCA has since declined. He said four affiliate clubs have been suspended due to their failure to pay annual membership fees, saying it is a constitutional breach.

“The suspensions shall remain in force pending payment of all outstanding annual membership fees, submission of a registration certificate as proof of their re-registration with the Registrar of Societies, and other compliance requirements by the affected clubs,” Potongwane explained.

The suspended affiliate clubs are Motloutse Cycling Club, Gaborone Cycling Club, Setobetobe Cycling Club and Team Cycling.

The current BCA membership is 10 affiliate clubs consisting of Botrail Cycling Club, Cycle For Life Cycling Club, Jwaneng Cycling Club, Karowe Cycling Club, Morupule Cycling Club, Moshupa Cycling Club, Orapa Cycling Club, Team JonMol, Tsela Riders Cycling Club and Team Swift. Regarding participation in the executive committee, Potongwane said there is lack of interest from affiliate members.

“We hardly get numbers for positions. I therefore encourage members to be involved to take the association further for the benefit of young aspiring riders,” said Potongwane. ENDS
