Mares safe after attack in Kinshasa

Botswana Football Association (BFA) has assured supporters that the senior women's national team is safe after its bus was attacked with a stone in Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday evening.
An individual threw an object believed to be a brick or stone at the Mares team bus while they were on their way to a training session in Kinshasa, ahead of the second leg of their 2026 WAFCON qualifiers against the Leopards dames.
"While the individual's intentions remain unclear, following a thorough assessment by our security team, it is believed that the person may have mistakenly identified the bus as a public transport vehicle. We want to assure the public and all stakeholders that while we take team security seriously, we are also committed to maintaining a balanced perspective on incidents of this nature. The team is safe, and preparations for the upcoming match remain on track as scheduled," BFA said in a statement released today.
The association highlighted that while the team did not have a police escort to the training session at the time of the incident, they were escorted from the airport to their hotel, where they were safely accommodated.
"The host association has since assured us that a police escort will be in place for all future team movements, including today's training session and leading up to the match. The Mares are safe, focused, and fully prepared to compete in their scheduled match against DR Congo on February 26, 2025, in Kinshasa," BFA added.
They further said they remained steadfast in prioritising the safety and well being of the association's personnel and would provide further updates should the need arise. ENDS
