Concern over unlawful transport operators
19 Feb 2025
The increasing numbers of undocumented public transporters between Mochudi and Gaborone are a serious concern and need urgent attention.
Commenting on the Budget Speech yesterday, Kgatleng Central legislator, Mr Mpho Morolong said the constituency was affected by unlicensed transporters competing for customers with licenced buses transporting people between Gaborone and Mochudi.
He was of the view that the Mochudi-Gaborone route be open to combi operators as licensed public transporters were now losing business to the seven-seater vehicles.
Mr Morolong further said the constituents were concerned by long standing challenges such as unemployment, flooding during the rainy season, dilapidated government facilities, among other things.
He said constituents had long been promised a hospital that was failing to take off. The project he said was only on paper and its implementation remained a dream.
He raised a concern that it appeared that communities around Gaborone may not get facilities like hospital since it was believed they would access such services in Gaborone.
Mr Morolong also asked for security to be intensified by increasing police visibility and equipping them with necessary resources to combat all forms of crime in the constituency.
He also said shortage of potable water was a challenge in the constituency.
“Let us prioritise provision of water for the community,” he said, encouraging government and community to engage in all measures to also harvest rain water.
Mr Morolong said institutions in the constituency catering for people with disabilities, the visually impaired were subjected to shortage of amenities and were in need of special equipment to access education.
He also pleaded that care givers for people with disabilities be catered for in the budget.
He said among the challenges in his constituency, was delay in allocation of land.
On health issues he said post COVID-19 pandemic, some people who received COVID-19 vaccines still complained of side effects they suspected to be the after effects of such vaccines.
Therefore, MP said it was important to investigate such cases of the effects of vaccines. ENDS
