Youth empowers women through pageant

02 Feb 2025

In the heart of Dutlwe, the Luzwe Beauty Pageant stands as a powerful symbol of empowerment, resilience, and community spirit. Founded in 2018 by the inspiring Mimi Arona Mosekama, a 22-year-old humanitarian and aspiring entrepreneur, this pageant offers more than just a celebration of beauty; it serves as a platform for young women in Dutlwe to showcase their talents, express themselves, and build the confidence necessary to pursue their dreams.

Mosekama’s journey to founding the pageant reflects her strength and determination. Growing up, she faced bullying and discrimination because of her skin colour challenges that could have deterred many. Instead, she transformed those difficult experiences into a driving force for change within her community. The Luzwe Beauty Pageant was born from her desire to uplift and empower young women who, like her, have encountered hardships.

The name ‘Luzwe,’ derived from the Sekgalagadi language, illustrates Mosekama’s deep connection to the village’s heritage and history. It symbolises the spirit of perseverance, inspired by the village’s discovery of water in a harsh, arid land where resilience turned adversity into opportunity.

The Luzwe Beauty Pageant’s mission is clear: to provide young women with the chance to shine. By offering a platform to showcase their skills, share their stories, and express their creativity, the pageant nurtures self-love and confidence. Mosekama’s personal motto“Never give up, for in the end, you will succeed”, resonates through the pageant’s values, inspiring contestants and the wider community to continue pushing forward despite obstacles.

As the Luzwe Beauty Pageant continues to flourish, it remains a testament to the strength of young women in Dutlwe, paving the way for future generations to embrace their identities and pursue their dreams with courage and determination.

Beyond beauty and talent, Mosekama said the pageant aimed to foster a strong sense of community. It creates a safe, supportive environment where women are encouraged to embrace their uniqueness, celebrate their diversity, and empower each other. “Luzwe Beauty Pageant does not only build self-confidence but also promotes leadership and positive thinking, encouraging young women to become change-makers and role models within their communities,” said Mosekama

The impact of Luzwe Beauty Pageant extends far beyond the stage. It has sparked a movement in Dutlwe, promoting a culture of inclusivity, resilience, and mutual support. Through the pageant, the women of Dutlwe not only gain the confidence to succeed in their personal endeavours but also inspire others to break down barriers and strive for excellence.

The pageant also brings together the wider Dutlwe community, fostering unity and a collective sense of pride in its young people. By celebrating their achievements, Luzwe Beauty Pageant provides a powerful reminder that the future is in the hands of empowered women who are passionate about making a difference, not just for themselves, but for the entire community.

With its mission, objectives, and unwavering dedication to empowering young women, the Luzwe Beauty Pageant continues to transform lives in Dutlwe. It serves as a shining example of what is possible when young people are given the tools, support, and platform to succeed. In a world that often tells young women to stay small, Luzwe is showing that with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude, anything is possible.

Aside from being a pageant director Mosekama is also an academy graduate of Women Entrepreneurs under Market studies, a platform that has nurtured her entrepreneurial spirits.

In the words of Winston Churchill, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”  Through Luzwe Beauty Pageant, Mosekama believes women of Dutlwe embody the spirit of perseverance, proving that no matter the trials faced, success is always within reach.
