Jace introduces deep tradition rhythms

30 Jan 2025

For years, Thatayaone Mkhutshwa, alias Jace, has been shaping the music industry from behind the scenes producing, arranging, and directing for local artists such as Khoisan, and Punah Gabasiane, among others.

But now, the multi-talented musician is stepping into his own spotlight, producing his debut single, Kgomo ya Mmopa, which he said was released last year November.

In an interview yesterday, he said he explored Setswana heritage through the dynamic lens of Afrobeat, blending traditional rhythms with contemporary soundscapes in his upcoming Extended Play (EP).

“I grew up in a community that celebrates Setswana traditions, and that has shaped my sound in so many ways,” he shared.

This project, he said, was a deep exploration of identity, merging Setswana folklore with Afrobeat influences.

“This EP marks a turning point in my career,” he said.

After years of working in the background, he has shared that he is ready to step forward as a solo artist. He said this project also signified a shift in artistic intent.

“I’ve always been behind the scenes, focusing on production. But with this EP, I finally get to express myself fully,” he said.

Shedding more light about the new release, he said the Afrobeat-infused track is talking about betrayal and jealousy.

He said he worked with producer and arranger Thabang Saakane aka Percy Pjaay Jackson in the production of the song. He said he spent about a month and a half refining every detail, recording, mixing, and mastering the songs.

Out of the entire project, one song that stands out to him is Mamela, Mamela is my favourite.

"It’s a love song, very relatable, and allows listeners to connect with their own experiences,” he said.

He added that it also reflected his personal journey in relationships. Even though the song was released, bringing this project to life was not without its challenges.

“The creative process was tough. There was so much to do with limited resources, and I had moments of self-doubt,” he added.

The artiste said he struggled with ideas and felt overwhelmed by his own expectations. However, seeing his vision coming to life made it all worthwhile.

The EP will be available on all major digital platforms, including Spotify, iTunes, Deezer, DistroKid, and YouTube, with local radio stations also set to feature the new music.

Jace hopes that music enthusists will connect with the project and appreciate the fusion of culture and modern sounds.

“As an artist, I believe sound always evolves, and my future music will reflect that,” he noted.

He said the way people created music was influenced by cultural shifts, technology, and personal growth. While there were no artistes collaborations on this project, the artiste was optimistic about it.

“I am definitely working on getting collaborations for my next projects, really soon,” he said.

From producer to solo artist, Jace said he was stepping boldly into his own artistry, embracing his roots while carving out a fresh and innovative sound. ENDS
