Makrona finally goes Afro dance pop way

29 Jan 2025

The beat goes as the local music industry unremittingly keeps on announcing new stars. One of the earliest releases of 2025 is Makrona’s four-track Extended Play (EP) titled ‘Kronic Sounds Vol. 1” derived from his stage name Makrona.

The EP is a compilation of a typical afro dance pop genre that assimilates the kind of the bolohouse or bolobedu house, a South African music style rooted in the Limpopo Province.

The genre is characterised by fast-paced beats, heavy bass line and melodic synths.

It is a fusion of traditional music such as kwaito and house with modern electronic music that could be aligned to Makhadzi, King Monada, Master KG, Kharisma, Shebexht, etc.

Having mentioned the aforementioned artists, it is no doubt that Makrona’s artwork will set the dance floor ablaze as this groovy genre has a tendency of leaving everyone moving whenever dropped on the ones and twos.

The artist, whose real names are Kaboyaone Donald Popo, is not a newbie but has been battling up to penetrate the industry since 2012 with Twinaz, a dancing crew manned by a quad of lads by then before they parted ways.

Makrona said his calling for music started to manifest whilst a school boy who was so passionate to feature in variety shows.

“I used to unleash my talent as a dancer in community pageants, school talent shows and other social events.

“During the course of the journey I had a chance to work with many artists,” Makrona narrated his story.

Along the way, Makrona has at one point shared the stage with some veterans of the local industry such as Exodus, and Wizards.

“In 2018 I realised that I have potential in song composing and singing. I took part in the President’s competitions where I scooped position 22 out of hundreds of upcoming vocalists in the Kweneng District.

“My duty as a musician is to compose, and sing my own music. I do genres ranging from house kwasa, house, kwaito and motswako,” said Makrona.

On September 25, 2021 Makrona released his first Afro motswako single titled, ‘Botswana’, produced by Royal Dawgs Production in. This time around Makrona said he felt he had to return to the thing that he masters most as he is a person of hyper energies.

“The Kronic Sounds Vol. 1”’s first track is a song called “Collaboration”. Like its name, ‘Collaboration’ longs for sound socialisation within the community. The hit ‘Soulmate’ fades in after ‘Collaboration’. ‘Soulmate’ appreciates the warm love that Makrona relishes from his wife. Track 3 is called ‘Batswana,’ a patriotic song that promotes cultural harmony relished by various tribes in Botswana. Makrona closes the EP with a song called ‘Majita’, which appeals to guys not to flirt with other men’s partners. ‘Kronic Sounds Vol. 1’ is a not-to-miss EP in your music collection because it is an all-hit project that carries significant messages relevant to the current times. The EP was programmed, engineered and mastered by Carter G and Mansiblos. ENDS
