Chiepe dedicated her life to shaping Botswana - BDP

Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) says former cabinet minister, Dr Gaositwe Chiepe, who passed away on January 27 aged 102, has inspired generations and her legacy will forever remain etched in history.

“It is with profound sadness that the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) announces the passing of a true national treasure, Mme Dr Gaositwe K.T. Chiepe (1922 - 2025). A staunch member of the mighty BDP, Dr Chiepe dedicated her life to serving Botswana, she was a symbol of hope, wisdom, and resilience who dedicated her life to shaping Botswana into the proud nation we are today,” the party said in a statement released yesterday.

“Her legacy as an educator, diplomat, and political leader will forever remain etched in our history. She inspired generations with her courage and unwavering commitment to serving her country. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, fellow democrats and all Batswana who cherished her immense contributions. May her soul rest in eternal peace," the release added.

Dr Chiepe was the first female cabinet member and served as Minister of Trade and Industry from 1977 to 1984, Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1994, as well as that of Education from 1994 to 1999. ends
