Wearing school uniforms to entertainment events sparks debate
23 Jan 2025
A trend of wearing of old school uniforms to entertainment events has sparked divided opinions.
While some view it as a harmless display of nostalgia and school spirit, others see it as disrespectful to the institution and to the uniform itself.
A teacher, Olaotse Kebalepile, sees the trend as a devaluation of the uniform, arguing that it diminishes the significance of the years spent striving to uphold its standards. He believes that wearing the uniform in such casual settings trivialises the achievements and responsibilities associated with school.
“The school uniform represents discipline, commitment, and academic aspiration. To see it worn at a nightclub or informal gathering feels, to me, like a betrayal of those ideals,” Kebalepile explained.
However, not everyone shares this perspective. Many former learners argue that wearing their old uniforms is a simple expression of fond memories and a connection to their former school. They see it as a lighthearted celebration of their past, rather than a sign of disrespect.
For them, the uniform serves as a visual reminder of friendships forged and lessons learned, evoking feelings of camaraderie and nostalgia.
“It is a way to connect with old friends and relive the good times,” explains one former student, who wishes to remain anonymous.
“It is not meant to be disrespectful. It’s simply a fun way to celebrate our school days.”
The debate raises complex questions about the evolving relationship between former students and their alma maters. ENDS
