The peaceful power transition in Botswana has been hailed as a testament to the effectiveness of democracy. Lord Collins of Highbury, the United Kingdom’s Under Secretary of State for Africa, made this observation during a courtesy call to Kgosi Malope II, Chairperson of Ntlo Ya Dikgosi, on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Lord Collins emphasised that the power transition following last year’s general elections was not only smooth but also highlighted the inherent stability within the country.
He noted that this peaceful transfer was particularly significant given the long tenure of the previous ruling party.
“Botswana’s transition story is one of peace and stability, a clear indication of how democracy works and can flourish,” he stated.
He expressed that the primary aim of his visit was to bolster bilateral relations between the UK and Botswana, focusing on establishing a strong partnership rooted in equality and mutual respect, with an eye on achieving economic growth for both nations.
He mentioned that in his discussions with President Advocate Duma Boko, they both agreed to implement regular exchanges to advance shared goals related to economic growth.
Economic development emerged as a central theme during their dialogues, with Lord Collins highlighting the necessity of diversifying trade.
He indicated that his discussions extended to both the government and the private sector to explore opportunities for collaboration.
Furthermore, he remarked, “One of the commitments of the new UK government is to fulfill its missions, and driving economic growth is our top priority.”
In his remarks, Kgosi Malope II expressed the eagerness of Ntlo Ya Dikgosi to establish partnerships with the UK’s House of Lords, advocating for regular exchange programs that could foster capacity building for members and staff.
He acknowledged the longstanding bilateral relations between Botswana and the UK, which had aided Botswana’s exports into the UK market. ENDS
