Despite the adverse challenges and uncertainties, film has emerged as a powerful tool for job creation, tourism and cultural exchange.

Through storytelling, local talent is fostered thus attracting international collaborations and showcasing Botswana’s rich landscapes and heritage, ultimately enhancing Botswana’s global visibility.

With strategic investments and infrastructure development, the film sector can contribute immensely to the country’s economic growth and cultural development.

Speaking at the Awil College graduation ceremony held under theme, Traversing the future of film and theatre through thunderstorm and calm seas, Dr Macdelyn Mosalagae said the film industry is engulfed by obstacles and it needs well equipped graduates that are resilient, hopeful and able to channel their energies towards growing the industry.

“The career paths you have chosen in film and theatre come with their own set of challenges, which are often misunderstood, yet you have persevered and endured to reach this moment.

You have lived up to the institution motto “Mmatlakgomo kodumela, o etse mhata sediba”, which denotes burning embodied when you want something magnificent flowering the need for patience and perseverance in order to triumph over obstacles,” explained Dr Mosalagae.

Dr Mosalagae further made reference to the Biblical scripture in the book of Psalm 126:5-6, which reads; “Those who sow with tears will sing when they reap. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves”.

This message, she said, it distinguished graduates from those who choose to give up in the midst of challenges instead of marveling at crossing the bridge despite all the pitfalls.

Additionally she said graduates encountered industry experiences that sharpened and prepared them to tackle any adversities that may arise.

“With hope for change on the new government, I look forward to brighter days for you and the industry in which you work”, noted Dr Mosalagae. Graduate and students mouthpiece, Mr Katso Balesamang, said the occasion marked the end of a chapter and the beginning of the new and unknown.

“It is not challenges that define us but how we choose to respond to them. I would like to express much gratitude to the lecturers and parents for the support rendered throughout our academia.

The future of Botswana cinema is in our hands and through our disciplines, we will create films that will shine light on untold truths that make people laugh, cry and think,” expressed Balesamang.

Her urged his fellow graduates to follow their passion and challenge themselves towards changing the situation of the Botswana film industry and also refine their crafts, dig deeper and most importantly trust their instincts. ENDS.
