NO LEGAL PROVISION TO GRANT POLLING AGENTS ELECTRORATE OMANG
30 Oct 2024
Returning officer for Charleshill constituency, Mr Aaron Mafokate says there is no legal provision that grants polling agents the right to hold electorates national identity card to verify their national identity card numbers alongside the Independent Electoral Commission polling staff.
He said they experienced challenges in some polling districts in Charleshill constituency where some polling agents demanded to see Omang of electorates during a voting session, which was against the law.
“Voting started well today at all polling stations on time. The only challenge we had was that some polling agents wanted to see the electorates Omang cards. Their contention was that they wanted to confirm if indeed the identities belonged to them alleging that some may be using Omang for dead people," he said.
Nonetheless, he said there is no legal provision for them to see electorate Omang cards as per the electoral act.
