The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) emphasised the importance of well-trained personnel on electoral issues.

Speaking  during a one-day workshop  on Friday in Kanye, IEC’s chief public relations officer, Mr Osupile Maroba, said the  training was part of the preparations for the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 30.

He underscored the crucial role in overseeing the training and supervision of polling staff nationwide. He highlighted the necessity for these officers to engage with heads of departments, including district commissioners, council secretaries, and school heads, ensuring that each individual was equipped with the requisite skills and tools to facilitate a successful electoral process.

During the workshop, Mr Maroba outlined key training components, including strategies for managing various situations that may arise during elections, handling election materials, and cooperating effectively with the media, party agents, and election observers.

Furthermore, Mr Maroba clarified the essential documents needed for voting, which include the IEC voter’s card and a valid National Identity Card.

He assured that the election materials, such as ballot boxes, would be under strict security measures to guarantee their protection.

The IEC official emphasised that individuals recommended for appointment as electoral officers should be robust, trustworthy, and energetic to effectively fulfill their responsibilities in what he described as a sensitive exercise.

Mr Maroba also advised the returning officers to thoroughly read and understand the electoral act, as this knowledge would enable them to act fairly and uphold the integrity of the electoral process. Ends
