Masisi calls nation to pray for elections
22 Sep 2024
President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has called on citizens to pray for the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 30.
Speaking at a kgotla meeting in Tshimoyapula on Thursday, President Masisi highlighted the importance of prayer in ensuring that the elections were conducted fairly and freely, emphasising Botswana’s commitment to democratic principles.
He urged Batswana to turn out in large numbers to vote, reminding them that the outcome of the elections depended on the electorate.
The President cautioned against any interference in the electoral process, warning that violent means or threats to sway election results would not be tolerated and would lead to severe legal consequences.
“The threats during elections have the potential to incite violence and disturb the peace, tarnishing the reputation of our country,” President Masisi stated.
To facilitate voter participation, President Masisi has declared October 30 and 31 as paid public holidays.
This decision, he explained, aimed to enable all registered voters to exercise their right to universal suffrage without the distractions of work commitments.
Furthermore, the President clarified that only polling officers and those designated to ensure a safe and democratic election would be permitted to work on election day.
He said that allowing others to work could pose safety risks as voters might be hurried to return to their jobs after casting their ballots.
“Essential and critical services will, however, be permitted to operate,” he noted.
Concerning presidential term limit, President Masisi emphasised that Botswana’s constitution stipulated a maximum term of 10 years, saying that the Vice President would automatically ascend to the presidency upon the completion of the term.
This, he said, should he be re-elected for a second term, it would conclude on March 31, 2028, in accordance with constitutional guidelines. ENDs
