Lucara Botswana is a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of Lucara Diamond Corp that owns Karowe mine in the Boteti District.
The mine recently discovered a 2,492 carat diamond, which was detected through Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray Transmission technology that was installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large and high value diamonds.
The find is the world’s second biggest diamond ever unearthed and it joins a roster of other significant discoveries from the mine including the 1,758 carat Sewelô and the 1, 109 carat Lesedi la Rona, which was sold for US$53 million to Graff Diamonds, a British multinational jeweller based in London.
In appreciating yet another huge gem recently discovered, the biggest diamond ever mined in Botswana, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi on August 22 said the discovery symbolised Botswana’s continued ascent as a global leader in diamond production. He said it also translated into more developments, to improve the lives of Batswana. Ends
