Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) leader, His Excellency President Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has been exalted for his vision, dedication and tireless efforts to move the country forward.

Welcoming delegates at the BDP’s 40th National Congress in Tlokweng on Saturday, party chairperson and Vice President, His Honour Mr Slumber Tsogwane said under the guidance of President Masisi in the last 10 years, the BDP had flourished and the country experienced remarkable progress. “We thank the outstanding leadership of our leader Dr Masisi. He has served with exceptional distinction and servant leadership, a leader of the people. We are forever grateful for your vision to move this country forward,” said Mr Tsogwane.

He added that President Masisi’s dedication to serve had led him to travel across the country to improve the lives of Batswana. He also thanked him for his resilience and fortitude as well as advancing the interests of the Republic of Botswana. “Your diplomatic efforts in addressing issues such as poverty, climate change and equity in international trade relations among others have enhanced our global presence through engagement with political leaders of your standing as well as forward thinking leaders of global companies, “ he said.

Vice President Tsogwane said Dr Masisi has promoted Botswana’s values and interests as well as marshalled political and economic diplomacy to foster lasting global partnerships for the benefit of the country and its development partners. He added that the presence of dignitaries from across the border was testament to the enduring bond of friendship that Botswana shared with its neighbours.

Therefore, he implored delegates to unite and work for the party in order to ensure victory and renewal of their mandate. “BDP is not just a political party, but a movement welded together by patriotism and a voluntary desire to serve,” he said, adding that members also had an unwavering commitment to the well-being of citizens. “We shall continue to be the leading political force maintaining our position as an organisation where participatory democracy thrives,” added Mr Tsogwane.

He urged democrats to remain united, saying unity was the only way the BDP could continue to deliver on its mandate and promises. “Unity must be the ultimate winner after this congress, my appeal to each one of you is put aside your differences,” he said, noting that the party’s primary elections were completed.

The ruling party welcomed new members to its fold, including former Gaborone mayor, Mr Kagiso Thutlwe and former Botswana National Front (BNF) member of the central committee and activist, Mr Lemogang Ntime. Ends
