The newly elected Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) North West regional chairperson Mr Moatlhodi Sango has vowed to promote peace and stability within the party.

Speaking during a regional congress to elect the new executive committee in Maun on April 7, Mr Sango said the new leadership had a mammoth task of guiding and restoring discipline.

“We will ensure that the party constitution, processes and procedures are followed to the letter,” he said. The elections followed the resignation of all former committee members who have declared interest in contesting the upcoming 2024 general elections.  

He pointed out that the region had been unstable for some time, adding that some democrats have also adopted a culture of sharing internal party issues on social media.

Some are using the names of party leaders to fuel division amongst party members and tarnish the name of the BDP, he said

Furthermore, Mr Sango said they needed to work together to win all the seven constituencies in their region in the upcoming general elections.

He also said they could not grow the party by entertaining self-centred people and emphasised the need to do things differently and  put the party first. He thanked the past committee under the leadership of Mr Reaboka Mbulawa for their selfless and devoted service to the party. The committee, he said, left a strong foundation which needed to be maintained as they prepared for the general elections.

He said the BDP had a chance to win more seats because opposition parties were weakened by their internal fights.

The BDP secretary general, Mr Kavis Kario had earlier proclaimed that the party was ready for the elections and urged fellow democrats to work in unity and wholeheartedly for the party.

The party, he said, had a great history of stability and that it should be maintained. “Our forefathers formed this party to fight all forms of oppression, tribalism and any negative issues that hindered economic growth,” said.

He said in the North West region they pride themselves on veteran politicians such as the late Mr Gaerolwe Kwerepe and Mr Tsheko Tsheko who worked tirelessly using their resources to serve the party.

He also said the party was led by visionary leaders who ensured that it was one of the least corrupt countries.

Mr Sango won the regional chairpersonship with 98 votes against Mr Tebogo Boalotswe’s 72. ENDS
