Botswana pleads for world peace

21 Mar 2024

Botswana is in support of efforts aimed at ending conflicts and bringing peace and stability to parts of the world affected by conflicts.
As such, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said Botswana appealed to like-minded countries like Bahamas to amplify its voice in calling for peace and stability the world over.
Speaking during a state dinner on Tuesday in honour of Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Bahamas Mr Phillip Davis, he said the world was currently engulfed by challenges, especially in areas of peace and security.
Dr Masisi said recent increase in world conflicts not only affected concerned parties, but also flow of goods and services worldwide and human suffering. He therefore said there was need for urgent cessation of hostilities and disruption of genuine negotiations in view to finding peaceful and lasting solutions to all conflicts.
He said the SADC region also faced fights between insurgencies and militia groups in the northern parts of Mozambique and some parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where SADC was actively engaged in efforts to find last solutions to the conflicts and ensure that peace and security reigned.
“Botswana is part of the SADC mission in Mozambique which has been deployed since June 2021 to assist in bringing peace and security to the Carbo Delgado Province in Mozambique,” he said.
President Masisi said Botswana prided itself in her democratic credentials since attaining independence in 1966 and would continue to nurture such ideals. He said democracy was an underlying pillar of sustainable development and peace. President Masisi said Mr Davis visit came at a time when the country was preparing for its 13th General Elections to take place in October.
He said Botswana’s Independent Electoral Commission was close to concluding voter registration and the country expected to deliver free, fair and credible elections in line with established legal framework as well as international principles and standards. End
