Botswana receives assistance to tackle climate change challenges

 Botswana government received assistance to tackle climate change and Meteorological matters at COP28. 

The Chinese government, through the China Academy of Space (CAST) donated a Multi satellite integration Meteorological Transportable Ground Application System to the Department of Meteorological Services in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to the tune of P31 million. 

The equipment will help with tracking satellite data acquisition as well as imaging and processing. 

The Chinese government held a ceremony where different developing countries signed for the cooperation. 

Giving her remarks, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Ms Philda Nani Kereng appreciated the Chinese government through South-South framework for assisting developing countries adapt and mitigate climate change through the provision of financial and technical resources to transition to low carbon and climate resilience patterns. 

Minister Kereng signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of government. 

Still on technical cooperation, Government of Italy through Ministry of Ecological Transition pledged to support Botswana government in the field of Sustainable Development to carry out the following; improve water resources management and protecting and restoring water-related ecosystem; promote access to sustainable renewable and efficient energy; strengthen and coordinate the efforts to combat global climate change and address its adverse effects; protect, restore and enhance sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems to sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, land degradation and biodiversity loss.

A Memorandum of Understanding is yet to be signed between the two governments. ENDS
