Mmaphula East bye-election ongoing

24 Jun 2023

Mmaphula East ward voters in Palapye constituency braved the cold Saturday morning to cast their vote in the bye-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Councillor Gagoope Sebina of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in April.

In an interview, returning officer Mr Mompati Ntapu said all the seven polling stations; Extension 8, Extension 1, Sebeso Primary School, Extension 5, Dikabeya, Assemblies of God and Extension 10 opened on time.

About 1,951 voters are expected to turn up at all the seven polling stations.

BDP won the ward in 2019 with 633 votes followed by Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) with 522 votes and 145 votes for Alliance for Progressives.

Council candidates for the ward are Mr Gaolathe Kenosi of Botswana Congress Party, Mr Andre Phalalo of BDP, Mr Mompoloki Mohutsiwa of UDC and an Independent candidate Mr Pelotlhomogi Ntebang. Ends
