The Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP)has reportedly registered some milestones in its drive to transform the lives of Batswana.
The remarks were made by party chairman and also vice president Mr Slumber Tsogwane in Maun Sunday during victory celebrations for Kgosing/Kubung councillor Mr Tswelelo Sebati.
Mr Sebati was the only BDP council candidate who won a seat in Maun West constituency during the 2019 general elections.
Pointing out that government was eager to transform the country through the 4th Industrial Revolution, Mr Tsogwane said digitisation milestones had been reached in terms of Internet connectivity and equipping teachers and learners with laptops .
As part of the economic diversification drive, the vice president said restrictions had been imposed on the importation of some horticultural products in a bid to empower Batswana and position the country for attaining self-sufficiency in food production.
Mr Tsogwane said since the success of government efforts were dependent on improved service delivery, some sub-councils had been upgraded to fully fledged entities in order to bring services closer to the people.
He said the 2019 BDP manifesto was crafted with clear targets for transforming the lives of Batswana.
The aim, the vice president said, was to develop a more inclusive economy where Batswana would participate in wealth creation and transform the economy into one capable of creating jobs.
“Our party has never failed Batswana as we continue to deliver the promises outlined in our manifesto,” he said.
He thanked the Maun community for choosing Mr Sebati as their council representative in 2019 and encouraged them to increase the number of political representatives in next year’s poll.
BDP secretary general, Mr Kavis Kario appealed to the public at large to support the party as it prepared for the 2024 general elections.
“There is no alternative to BDP and all can see the efforts it has made so far in terms of developments. Currently, plans are underway to improve Sehithwa/Mohembo road and tenders have been awarded,” he stated.
Specially Elected MP, Ms Beauty Manake urged constituencies to strive for improving and increasing women’s representation in politics.
Calling on them to work as a unit to identify strong and capable women for contesting elections, she said from the seven constituencies under the north west region, at least three women should be sent to Parliament next year.
Ms Manake urged women to register for BDP membership so that they could contest for positions.
For his part, Mr Sebati thanked the party leadership for gracing the occasion.
He commended his campaign manager Mr Spencer Ledimo and his team for working hard for victory expressing the hope that they would do the same to retain the ward in the 2024 general elections. Ends
