Modubule BMD leader
31 Oct 2022
Former Member of Parliament for Lobatse, Mr Nehemiah Modubule has been elected new president of Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).
Mr Modubule was unopposed during the BMD’s 6th national elective congress held in Mahalapye on Saturday.
He takes over from Dr Sidney Pilane, who stepped down as the president of the movement in August 2020.
Mr Keamogetswe Keamogetswe was elected vice president while Mr Bakang Kolobe became the secretary general of the party.
The position of deputy general secretary went to Mr Onkagetse Petrus.
Additional member positions were won by Mr Isaac Malipiti, Mr Kopanelo Theko, Mr Michael Mmati and Ms Nchadi Alebo.
In an interview after the elections, Mr Modubule called on members of BMD who lost hope after its dismal performance in the 2019 general elections to come back and work on reviving the party.
He said they lost a lot of members after the 2019 general elections because the party did not fair well, but promised that the new leadership would take the party to another level.
He complained that party structures were not up to standard, promising that they would work hard to revitalise them.
He also said the new committee would work hard to attract both old and new members and would also to lead the movement to victory.
On forming a coalition, Mr Modubule said they would take a resolution on the matter in due course.
He added that his party would devise the best strategy to approach the elections.
He said if his party decides to go it alone in the coming general elections it would do so without fear.
Mr Modubule thanked BMD members who showed confidence in his ability to become their president. ENDS
